Marpac (now officially known as Yogasleep) is the original pioneer of the white noise industry and the creator of the beloved Dohm sound conditioner. Founded in 1962 by Jim Buckwalter, the company began when Jim discovered that the whooshing sound of air conditioning helped him sleep better. He invented the "Sleepmate" (later renamed the Dohm), a simple device containing a real fan inside an acoustic housing. For over 60 years, Marpac has been the "gold standard" for sleep therapy, celebrated for producing mechanical white noise rather than digital recordings.

Unlike apps or cheap speakers that play looping tracks, Marpac devices create a rich, non-repeating sound of rushing air that naturally masks background noises like traffic, snoring, and barking dogs. While the company has rebranded to Yogasleep to reflect a broader wellness focus, the "Marpac Dohm" remains iconic, trusted by millions of light sleepers, parents, and therapists worldwide.

Mission, Vision & Innovation

Marpac’s mission is "Serious Sleep." They operate on the vision that good sleep is the cornerstone of health and that the best way to achieve it is by controlling your auditory environment. Their defining innovation is the Asymmetrical Fan Design found in the Dohm.

By enclosing a fan within a specifically engineered acoustic shell with adjustable vents, Marpac created a device that generates the soothing sound of rushing air without the disturbance of moving air (wind). This "Signature Sound" is distinct from digital noise; it is a dynamic, physical sound that the brain perceives as "natural," preventing the subconscious irritation often caused by the discernible loops found in digital sound machines.
