About Marpac

Marpac (now officially known as Yogasleep) is the original pioneer of the white noise industry and the creator of the beloved Dohm sound conditioner. Founded in 1962 by Jim Buckwalter, the company began when Jim discovered that the whooshing sound of air conditioning helped him sleep better. He invented the "Sleepmate" (later renamed the Dohm), a simple device containing a real fan inside an acoustic housing. For over 60 years, Marpac has been the "gold standard" for sleep therapy, celebrated for producing mechanical white noise rather than digital recordings.

Unlike apps or cheap speakers that play looping tracks, Marpac devices create a rich, non-repeating sound of rushing air that naturally masks background noises like traffic, snoring, and barking dogs. While the company has rebranded to Yogasleep to reflect a broader wellness focus, the "Marpac Dohm" remains iconic, trusted by millions of light sleepers, parents, and therapists worldwide.

Mission, Vision & Innovation

Marpac’s mission is "Serious Sleep." They operate on the vision that good sleep is the cornerstone of health and that the best way to achieve it is by controlling your auditory environment. Their defining innovation is the Asymmetrical Fan Design found in the Dohm.

By enclosing a fan within a specifically engineered acoustic shell with adjustable vents, Marpac created a device that generates the soothing sound of rushing air without the disturbance of moving air (wind). This "Signature Sound" is distinct from digital noise; it is a dynamic, physical sound that the brain perceives as "natural," preventing the subconscious irritation often caused by the discernible loops found in digital sound machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Marpac now called Yogasleep?

In 2020, Marpac rebranded to Yogasleep. The name change was designed to reflect the company's expansion beyond just sound machines into a wider range of sleep tools, including mattresses and bedding. However, the core products remain the same; the famous "Marpac Dohm" is now the "Yogasleep Dohm," but the technology inside is identical.

What is the difference between the Dohm and a digital machine?

The Dohm is a mechanical machine. It contains an actual spinning fan inside to create the sound of wind. The sound is continuous, random, and non-repeating. Digital machines (like the Hushh or Whish) play electronic recordings of white noise through a speaker. Some people prefer the Dohm because it sounds more "organic," while others prefer digital machines because they offer a wider variety of sounds (e.g., rain, ocean, songs).

Does the Dohm blow cool air around the room?

No. This is a common misconception. Although there is a fan spinning inside the unit to generate noise, the device is enclosed in a housing that traps the airflow. It produces the sound of a fan without the breeze, so it won't make you cold in winter or dry out your eyes.

How do I adjust the volume on the Dohm?

The Classic Dohm does not have a digital volume button. Instead, it has a Dual-Speed Switch (High/Low) and Adjustable Tone Cap. By twisting the cap and the sides of the machine, you open or close the air vents. Opening the vents makes the sound louder and higher pitched (more "hiss"), while closing them makes it quieter and deeper (more "roar").

Is it safe for babies?

Yes. Marpac/Yogasleep machines are widely recommended by pediatricians and sleep consultants. The constant "shushing" sound mimics the environment of the womb, which helps soothe newborns and allows them to link sleep cycles. The brand also produces the Hushh, a portable digital version specifically designed for strollers and car seats.
