About OptiPillows

OptiPillows is a specialized medical device brand that has carved a niche in the sleep industry by offering a portable, machine-free alternative to traditional CPAP therapy. Founded by sleep physician Dr. Sal Hakim, the brand was created to address the common compliance issues associated with sleep apnea treatments—namely, the bulk, noise, and discomfort of wearing a powered mask.

OptiPillows is best known for its EPAP Mask (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure), a reusable device that looks like a standard nasal pillow interface but functions without electricity, hoses, or a blower unit. By utilizing the wearer's own breathing to generate therapeutic pressure, OptiPillows provides a critical solution for frequent travelers, campers, and snorers who find standard CPAP machines too intrusive for their lifestyle.

Mission, Vision & Innovation

OptiPillows’ mission is to provide "freedom from the machine," operating on the vision that effective sleep therapy should be simple, silent, and portable. The core innovation of the brand is its Adjustable Expiratory Resistance. While other EPAP devices (like disposable nasal strips) offer a fixed level of pressure, the OptiPillows mask features a patented proprietary valve that allows the user to manually dial the resistance up or down (from 1 to 14 cmH2O).

This design allows the user to inhale freely with minimal resistance, but upon exhalation, the valve restricts airflow to create back-pressure, splinting the airway open to prevent collapse. This adjustability is a game-changer, allowing users to "train" themselves by starting at a low setting and gradually increasing efficacy as they adapt.

Sleep Solutions is NDIS Registered and Approved

Frequently Asked Questions

How is EPAP different from CPAP? CPAP

(Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) uses a motorized blower to force air into your airway to keep it open during both inhalation and exhalation. EPAP (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure) is passive; it lets you breathe in naturally, but creates resistance when you breathe out. This resistance traps a small amount of air in the airway, creating positive pressure that keeps the throat from collapsing.

Do I need a prescription for OptiPillows?

No. The OptiPillows EPAP mask is an FDA-cleared Class I medical device that is available over-the-counter without a prescription. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of snoring and mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Can this replace my CPAP machine?

For patients with Severe Sleep Apnea, OptiPillows is generally not a replacement for CPAP, as it cannot generate the high continuous pressures required to keep the airway open during inhalation. However, it is widely used by CPAP patients as a travel alternative (for flights or camping) or by those with Mild to Moderate apnea and simple snoring who cannot tolerate the noise or claustrophobia of a CPAP machine.

Does it work if I breathe through my mouth?

No. Like all nasal pillow devices, OptiPillows requires you to breathe through your nose to generate the necessary back-pressure. If you are a mouth breather, the therapeutic pressure will escape through your lips. Users are often advised to use a chin strap or mouth tape in conjunction with the mask if they have trouble keeping their mouth closed.

How long does the mask last?

Unlike disposable EPAP strips (which are thrown away daily), the OptiPillows mask is reusable. With proper cleaning (washing the nasal pillows daily and the valve weekly), the device is designed to last approximately one year. The kit typically comes with three sizes of nasal pillows (Small, Medium, Large) to ensure a proper seal.
