What Causes Snoring?

Obstructed Airway

Snoring happens when the flow of air through your mouth and nose is blocked and this is due to events occurring in the upper airway.

Snoring starts when muscles and tissues around the throat relax and settle towards the back of the mouth.

Consequently, when inhalation begins, small negative air pressure is created and causes an obstruction in the upper way which leads to snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructed Airway

How can OptiPillow EPAP Mask help?

Man Sleeping with the EPAP Mask

With the EPAP mask, obstruction of the upper airways is prevented by maintaining a positive expiratory pressure during expiration.

Man Sleeping with the EPAP Mask

Wear it like a CPAP mask and breathe normally

During inspiration, the valve opens allowing you to breathe in with ease.

1. Using your exhaled breath, the OptiPillow EPAP mask redirects the air through the valve to help keep your upper airways open and prevent snoring.

2. Since the only pressure comes from your exhaled air, this EPAP mask is able to cut down on noises that come from traditional nasal pillow masks, giving you a more comfortable and quiet night.

3. For a more comfortable experience, the expiratory pressure can be adjusted by rotating the sleeve to change the expiratory resistance.

The EPAP Mask alleviates upper airway obstruction using a Proprietary Valve Technology

OptiPillows EPAP Mask Valve 1

When you inhale, the membrane opens allowing you to breathe with minimal resistance.

OptiPillows EPAP Mask Valve 2

When you exhale, the membrane closes and forces the air to exit through a narrow hole on the side of the mask.

OptiPillows EPAP Mask Valve 3

The narrow opening can be adjusted by rotating the sleeve to adjust the pressure during expiration for more comfort.

  • With side resistance fully open, it generates 1 to 3 cmH2O pressure.
  • With side resistance, 50% closed, it generates 3 to 7 cmH2O pressure.
  • With side resistance, 75% closed, it generates 8 to 14 cmH2O pressure.

Helpful Hints!

When you start using the mask, keep the expiratory resistance open wide until you get acclimated. Practice using the mask during the day. It is recommended to use the mask with minimal expiratory resistance until you become fully comfortable sleeping with the mask.

Once you are fully comfortable, close the expiratory resistance about halfway and use it for a night. Then Increase or decrease the resistance until you find the best resistance and you begin to sleep well without difficulty.

Keep Your Mouth Closed

While using the EPAP mask, the mouth must remain closed for the mask to work. Opening the mouth occasionally is acceptable. When you are awake, you may be inclined to open your mouth as you feel the pressure building up. This is normal and is not likely to occur during sleep because you would not be aware of the pressure build-up.

CAUTION: The EPAP mask works for someone with mild sleep-disordered breathing such as snoring. It does not work for those with central sleep apnea, needing to use a full face mask or those who need a BIPAP machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is EPAP?

A: EPAP stands for Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure. The EPAP mask is a nasal mask that generates positive pressure during expiration. The EPAP mask my keep you awake the first time you use it. Do not give up after one try. It is not magic, like other devices, it may take a few nights to get used to it. If you cannot fall asleep, take it off. It will become easier and easier after each night.

Q: How is EPAP different from CPAP?

A: CPAP, as the name indicates, provides continuous positive airway pressure throughout the breathing cycle. In contrast, OptiPillows EPAP mask provides positive pressure only during the expiratory phase of the breathing cycle.

Q: How is Optipillows different from Provent?

A: Both use expiratory resistance technology, but Optipillows EPAP mask is reusable, easy to wear. Furthermore, Optipillows EPAP mask has adjustable expiratory resistance.

Q: Can Optipillows replace my CPAP machine?

A: For people with primary snoring, it is possible that OptiPillows will work as well as a CPAP machine.

Q: Can I use Optipillows during travel?

A: Optipillows EPAP mask is ideal for use during travel. You can store it in your pocket to use anytime, such as during a flight or camping. No power supply is needed.

Q: I have central sleep apnea, can I use Optipillows?

A: Patients with central sleep apnea should rely on their CPAP machines, and should adhere to their prescribed therapy.

Q: I open my mouth some time, is that a problem?

A: Opening the mouth occasionally to sigh or cough is not a problem while using EPAP devices. After a breath or two, the pressure will rise again. With CPAP, opening the mouth causes dryness because of the high volume of air flowing through the mouth. Dryness of the nose or throat is not a problem with the EPAP mask.

Not as good as Bongo RX
Tried on several separate occasions with no joy. Basically I've paid $170 for a product that cant be used.

The pillow sits on the outside of the nostrils which is fine but I had a reaction to silicon causing inflamation from the rubbing.

Even on the highest setting it doesn't restrict airflow as much as Bongo so it doesn't stop snoring.

The straps are cumbersome to remove for cleaning. The Bongo quick release pins are a much better option. (Posted on )

Too painful
Can last only a few hours, then nostrils become too unbearably sore to continue wearing and wakes you from sleep. If you loosen the straps enough to make it bearable, then the seal is easily broken and it is no longer effective. Poor design. Not recommended. (Posted on )

Works… but
This product / concept works. But it is so uncomfortable that I rip it off in my sleep or wake up with a sore area around the nose.

Have tried different size nose pieces, adjusted straps to many different setting and just can’t get it comfortable. (Posted on )

Useless and uncomfortable
This doesn't work, doesn't fit well and doesn't do what it proposes. Waste of money. (Posted on )
