About Protect-A-Bed

Protect-A-Bed is the undisputed global leader in mattress protection, a brand that single-handedly transformed a category once dominated by noisy, crinkly plastic sheets into a premium health and wellness essential. Founded in South Africa in 1980 and later establishing its global headquarters in Chicago (with a massive presence in Australia under Sleep Corp), the brand is best known for inventing the modern "invisible" mattress protector. Their products are designed to be undetectable under a sheet, providing a soft, silent barrier against spills, sweat, and allergens.

Protect-A-Bed is perhaps most famous for its industry-leading Stain & Damage Guarantee, a promise that if their protector fails to protect your mattress from a spill, they will professionally clean or replace the mattress itself (subject to terms), making it a mandatory "insurance policy" for nearly every new mattress sold in retail stores today.

Mission, Vision & Innovation

Protect-A-Bed’s mission is to "provide a healthy, hygienic sleep zone." They operate on the vision that a mattress is an investment that absorbs liters of perspiration and millions of skin flakes over its life, and it must be sealed to remain sanitary. The brand’s defining innovation is the Miracle Layer™. This is a proprietary polyurethane membrane that is completely waterproof yet uniquely air-vapor porous.

Unlike PVC (vinyl), which blocks air and makes the sleeper hot and sweaty, the Miracle Layer allows body heat to pass through the mattress while blocking liquids and dust mites from entering. This technology has earned them the approval of the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice® program and the Eczema Association of Australasia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it feel like plastic?

No. This is the main difference between Protect-A-Bed and cheap generic protectors. The Miracle Layer™ is flexible, silent, and thin. It is bonded to a fabric surface (like cotton terry, Tencel, or jersey), so when you put a fitted sheet over it, you cannot hear it crinkle or feel it underneath you. It is designed to be "whisper quiet."

What is the "Stain & Damage Guarantee"?

When you purchase a Protect-A-Bed protector at the same time as a new mattress from a participating retailer, the brand often offers a warranty (usually 10 years). If a spill penetrates the protector and stains the mattress during that period, Protect-A-Bed will send a professional cleaner to remove the stain. If they cannot remove it, they may replace the mattress. Note: You must register the warranty after purchase and follow care instructions strictly.

Is it safe for electric blankets?

Yes. You can use an electric blanket with a Protect-A-Bed protector. The recommended layering order is:

  • Mattress
  • Electric Blanket
  • Protect-A-Bed Protector
  • Fitted Sheet Placing the protector over the electric blanket protects the blanket (and the mattress) from accidents and sweat, which is safer and keeps the electric blanket clean.
What is the difference between the "Cotton Terry" and "Tencel" versions?
  • Cotton Terry: The classic, original version. It has a toweling texture which is highly absorbent, grabbing spills quickly before they run off.
  • Tencel (Signature Series): A smoother, silkier surface made from wood pulp. It is more breathable, cooler to the touch, and hypoallergenic, making it the preferred choice for people with sensitive skin or eczema.
How do I wash it?

You must wash it before use to remove manufacturing starch and soften the membrane. Generally, you can hot machine wash (up to 60°C) with standard detergent.

  • Critical Rule: Do NOT use bleach. Bleach will destroy the waterproof membrane.
  • Drying: You can tumble dry on medium heat. Do not dry on high heat, as it can melt or blister the waterproof backing.
