Back Sleeper Pillow Buying Guide

Find the perfect pillow for back sleeping - matched to your sleeping position, body frame, and fill preference. For the full range, see our Australian Pillow Buying Guide.

Around 38% of adults spend significant time sleeping on their back. Back sleeping distributes weight evenly, supports spinal alignment, and is ideal for reducing pressure points. But pillow choice is critical - a pillow that is too high pushes your head forward, straining the neck and closing airways. Too flat and your head falls backward, losing the natural cervical curve. The ideal back sleeper pillow is contoured or medium profile - high enough to support the neck curve but low enough to keep the head level with the spine.

At a Glance

  • Back sleepers need a low to medium profile pillow that supports the natural neck curve
  • A contoured pillow is often ideal - it cradles the neck without pushing the head forward
  • Latex, memory foam, and cool gel provide the best sustained support for back sleeping
  • Use the interactive guide below to get a personalised recommendation

The Challenge for Back Sleepers

A pillow that is too high pushes your head forward, straining the neck and closing airways. Too flat and your head falls backward, losing the natural cervical curve. The ideal back sleeper pillow is contoured or medium profile - high enough to support the neck curve but low enough to keep the head level with the spine.

Important Note

Back sleeping is not recommended for people with obstructive sleep apnoea, heavy snoring, or during late pregnancy. If you have any of these conditions, consider our side sleeper pillow guide instead.

Benefits of Back Sleeping

Around 38% of adults spend significant time sleeping on their back (Sleep Foundation) - and it offers some unique advantages.

Optimal Spinal Alignment

Optimal Spinal Alignment

Back sleeping distributes weight evenly across the widest surface of your body, placing the least stress on the spine. With the right pillow, the head, neck, and spine maintain a neutral position all night.

Fewer Wrinkles and Breakouts

Fewer Wrinkles and Breakouts

Because your face is not pressed into a pillow, back sleeping reduces the skin compression and friction that can cause sleep lines, wrinkles, and acne breakouts over time.

Reduced Joint Pressure

Reduced Joint Pressure

Back sleeping avoids concentrating weight on the shoulder, hip, or knee - making it a good option for people with joint pain, arthritis, or bursitis who find side sleeping uncomfortable.

Less Neck and Back Pain

Less Neck and Back Pain

A rounded pillow with built-in neck support that cradles the natural curve of the neck is one of the best ways to prevent back-sleeper neck pain, according to Harvard Medical School.

Better Breathing with Elevation

Better Breathing (with Elevation)

While flat back sleeping can worsen snoring, elevating the head slightly with a contoured pillow or wedge can open airways and reduce mild snoring and acid reflux symptoms.

Even Weight Distribution

Even Weight Distribution

Unlike side sleeping, which concentrates pressure on one shoulder and hip, back sleeping spreads your body weight across the full mattress surface - reducing the risk of pressure point pain.

Pillow Fill and Material Guide

Each fill type has a different feel, lifespan, and level of support. Understanding the differences helps you choose a pillow that suits the way you sleep.

Back Sleeper Tips for Better Sleep

Five practical adjustments to improve comfort and alignment.

1

Choose a contoured or medium profile pillow

Back sleepers do best with a pillow that has a slight contour to cradle the natural curve of the neck. A flat pillow provides no neck support, while one that is too thick pushes the head forward and strains the cervical spine.

2

Place a small pillow under your knees

A pillow under the knees takes pressure off the lower back by reducing the arch of the lumbar spine. This is especially helpful for people who experience lower back pain when lying flat.

3

Avoid pillows that are too high

A pillow that pushes your chin toward your chest restricts your airway and increases snoring. When lying on your back, your forehead and chin should be roughly level - not tilted forward.

4

Consider a wedge for acid reflux or snoring

If you experience mild snoring or acid reflux, elevating your head slightly (10-15 degrees) with a wedge pillow or adjustable base can help keep airways open and stomach acid down without compromising neck alignment.

5

Replace your pillow on schedule

Latex pillows last 5-10 years. Memory foam lasts 3-5 years. Feather and down last 2-5 years. Microfibre should be replaced every 1-2 years. An old pillow that has lost its shape cannot maintain proper neck support.
