About Protect-A-Bed

Everyone deserves the simple pleasure of a good night's sleep

We spend one third of our lives in bed so it is important that our sleep environment is healthy. This ensures a better nights sleep and overall wellbeing. Although we don't like to talk about it we all know that mattresses and pillows can yellow over time. Many of us think this is just a normal part of bedding, but it does not have to be and shouldn't. Those stains are often caused by our perspiration (the average person perspires on average a litre of water a day), shredded skin flakes (yuck) and everyday spills and stains that seep into our bedding.

All this amounts to food for dust mites whilst also contributing to the growth of mould and bacteria. A waterproof mattress protector, protects the mattress from these nasties and you and your family from the resulting allergens.

Protect-A-Bed® is therefore a must for a healthy sleep zone

Protect-A-Bed® 's range of Mattress and Pillow Protectors includes a waterproof Miracle Layer®. You won't even know you have waterproofing on your bed. Soft, comfortable and breathable it let's air vapour but not spills and stains through. Working in a similar way to our skin, but 10 to 15 times faster.

Available in a full range of sizes and a number of fabrics including TENCEL™ which is ideal for sensitive skin and eczema, recognised by the Eczema Association as Sensitive Skin Tried and Tested. Approved by the National Asthma Council's Sensitive Choice Program.

Protect-A-Bed is a proud Australian company, offering the number one brand of mattress protector in the world with partners and distributors in 46 countries. Protect A Bed develops its industry-leading products through scientific research and work with top entomologists to ensure exceptional quality, backed with the most extensive warranties in the business.

Originating in South Africa more than three decades ago, Protect-A-Bed co-founder David Kaplan discovered a receptive customer base in Australia for high quality mattress protectors. Recognizing the importance of Australian made products, the company moved its manufacturing and headquarters to Australia in 1995, and has been expanding product lines and markets since.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it feel like plastic?

No. This is the main difference between Protect-A-Bed and cheap generic protectors. The Miracle Layer™ is flexible, silent, and thin. It is bonded to a fabric surface (like cotton terry, Tencel, or jersey), so when you put a fitted sheet over it, you cannot hear it crinkle or feel it underneath you. It is designed to be "whisper quiet."

What is the "Stain & Damage Guarantee"?

When you purchase a Protect-A-Bed protector at the same time as a new mattress from a participating retailer, the brand often offers a warranty (usually 10 years). If a spill penetrates the protector and stains the mattress during that period, Protect-A-Bed will send a professional cleaner to remove the stain. If they cannot remove it, they may replace the mattress. Note: You must register the warranty after purchase and follow care instructions strictly.

Is it safe for electric blankets?

Yes. You can use an electric blanket with a Protect-A-Bed protector. The recommended layering order is:

  • Mattress
  • Electric Blanket
  • Protect-A-Bed Protector
  • Fitted Sheet Placing the protector over the electric blanket protects the blanket (and the mattress) from accidents and sweat, which is safer and keeps the electric blanket clean.
What is the difference between the "Cotton Terry" and "Tencel" versions?
  • Cotton Terry: The classic, original version. It has a toweling texture which is highly absorbent, grabbing spills quickly before they run off.
  • Tencel (Signature Series): A smoother, silkier surface made from wood pulp. It is more breathable, cooler to the touch, and hypoallergenic, making it the preferred choice for people with sensitive skin or eczema.
How do I wash it?

You must wash it before use to remove manufacturing starch and soften the membrane. Generally, you can hot machine wash (up to 60°C) with standard detergent.

  • Critical Rule: Do NOT use bleach. Bleach will destroy the waterproof membrane.
  • Drying: You can tumble dry on medium heat. Do not dry on high heat, as it can melt or blister the waterproof backing.
