About Travelrest

Travelrest (owned by HiGear Design, Inc.) is a highly innovative travel accessories brand that completely reimagined the mechanics of sleeping upright. The company was founded by John Mittelstadt, whose "a-ha" moment came during a grueling flight to Asia. Frustrated by traditional U-shaped neck pillows that pushed his head forward, he removed the shoelaces from his running shoes and tied his airline pillow to the seat's headrest to keep it in place.

This makeshift solution sparked the invention of the first-ever "tethered" travel pillow. Today, Travelrest is highly regarded for its award-winning ergonomic pillows, versatile travel blankets, and sleep masks, catering to frequent flyers, road-trippers, and individuals seeking targeted lateral support for chronic neck pain.

Mission, Vision & Innovation

Travelrest’s mission is to be an "innovation-led company dedicated to one goal: making travel more comfortable." Their vision is to eliminate the physical toll of transit, ensuring every journey ends as refreshed as it begins. The brand's defining innovation is its Patented Ergonomic Lateral Support.

Unlike standard neck rings that only support the cervical spine, the original Travelrest Ultimate Travel Pillow is designed as a long, curved cushion. It utilizes a tether cord that can be attached to the "wings" of an airline seat, a car headrest, or simply worn diagonally across the body like a messenger bag. This design provides full lateral support to the entire upper body, allowing the sleeper to lean into the pillow and completely relax their neck without their head bobbing forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Travelrest pillow different from a standard U-shaped travel neck pillow?

The Travelrest has a fundamentally different design philosophy. Where conventional U-shaped pillows sit around the back of the neck and are worn like a collar, the Travelrest runs vertically across the chest and side of the body, supporting the entire upper body and preventing the head from tilting sideways or falling forward. It can be attached to the seat's headrest wings or worn messenger-bag style, which means it stays in position even if you shift in your seat — something a loose neck pillow cannot do.

How does the Travelrest attach to an airline seat?

The Travelrest features a tether cord and dual attachment points that allow it to be secured to the winglets of an airline seat headrest, the headrest of a car seat, or clipped to a lap seatbelt. This tethering system is one of its most praised features, as it keeps the pillow stable against the side of your head and neck during sleep — preventing it from sliding away when you doze off and ensuring you don't have to hold it in place. It can also be worn "freestyle" with the cord slung over the shoulder, without any seat attachment at all.

How compact is the Travelrest when packed?

When deflated, the Travelrest rolls up to approximately 8cm x 25cm — small enough to fit into a daypack, handbag, or carry-on with ease. It can also be clipped directly to the outside of a luggage handle or backpack strap using its built-in attachment loop, so it doesn't take up any internal bag space at all. Inflation requires only three to four easy breaths and takes around 15–20 seconds; deflation is near-instant with a quick press of the valve.

Is the Travelrest suitable for all seat types and travel modes?

Yes — the Travelrest's versatile design works in airplane seats, car passenger seats, bus seats, train seats, and even wheelchairs. Its messenger-bag wearing style means it functions even in low-backed seats or seats without prominent headrests, where traditional tethered travel pillows would fail. It is suitable for adults and children over 8 years of age, and its adjustable inflation level means you can customise the firmness to your preference.

Does Travelrest offer anything beyond inflatable travel pillows?

Yes. The Travelrest range also includes the Nest and Curl memory foam travel neck pillows, which use thermo-sensitive memory foam that moulds to the contours of the neck and shoulders for those who prefer a foam option over inflatable. The range also includes travel blankets, a Tranquility contoured sleep mask, and an All-in-One bundle that combines the Ultimate Inflatable Pillow with a plush velour and memory foam cover and a travel blanket for a comprehensive travel sleep package.
