What is a Coverlet?

A coverlet is a lightweight bed covering that sits on top of your sheets as the final layer on your bed. It is thinner than a quilt or comforter and usually has a light fill held in place by stitching, which gives it structure and a neat, tailored look.

Unlike a quilt cover, a coverlet does not need a separate quilt inside it. It is ready to use straight out of the pack. Coverlets are also generally smaller than a bedspread: a bedspread is designed to fall almost to the floor, while a coverlet typically covers the top of the mattress and drapes partway down the sides.

Because they are light and decorative, coverlets are one of the easiest ways to change the look of a bedroom. A reversible coverlet like the Dotti goes a step further, giving you a second design on the underside for no extra effort.

When Should You Use a Coverlet?

A coverlet is one of the most versatile pieces you can own, and it earns its place on the bed in every season:

• Summer: Use it on its own over a top sheet when a quilt is too warm. It gives you a light layer of cover without overheating.
• Spring and autumn: Keep it at the foot of the bed and pull it up when the nights turn cool, or pair it with a light quilt for flexible warmth.
• Winter: Layer it over your quilt or doona for an extra layer of warmth and a styled, finished look.
• Everyday styling: Lay it over your made bed during the day to hide rumpled sheets and help keep dust and pet hair off your bedding underneath.
• Guest rooms: A coverlet makes a spare bed look inviting and gives visitors an easy extra layer they can use or fold back.
