Australian Guide to Choosing Tencel Sheets

Softer than silk, cooler than linen, kinder to sensitive skin - why Tencel is Australia’s fastest-growing sheet fabric and how to choose the right set.

Tencel (branded lyocell fibre) is made from the wood pulp of sustainably managed eucalyptus trees using a closed-loop production process that recovers over 99% of the solvent used. The result is a fabric that is softer than silk, cooler than linen, and manages moisture up to 50% more effectively than cotton. For hot sleepers, sensitive skin, and eco-conscious buyers, Tencel sheets offer a measurable performance advantage.

Tencel vs cotton: Tencel is the clear choice for hot sleepers, sensitive skin, eczema sufferers, and anyone prioritising moisture management. Cotton wins on wrinkle resistance and wider availability at budget price points.

Tencel vs bamboo: Performance is very similar - both are plant-based lyocell fabrics with excellent cooling and moisture-wicking. The key difference is in feel: Tencel has a slightly more structured, smooth finish with a subtle lustre, while bamboo has a softer, more fluid drape with a silkier hand-feel. Tencel also tends to show fewer wrinkles than bamboo after washing. Browse bamboo sheets for comparison.

100% Tencel vs Tencel-Cotton Blends

Tencel sheets are available in two formulations. Your choice depends on whether you want maximum cooling performance or a balance of softness, structure, and easy care.

Maximum Performance

100% Tencel

  • Maximum cooling and moisture-wicking
  • Smoothest possible hand-feel
  • Full performance benefit of the fibre
  • Slightly more prone to wrinkling
Balanced Choice

Tencel-Cotton Blend

  • Combines Tencel cooling with cotton structure
  • Better wrinkle resistance than pure Tencel
  • Easier to care for
  • Still noticeably cooler than pure cotton

Which should you choose?

For maximum cooling performance, choose 100% Tencel. For a balance of softness, structure, and easy care, a Tencel-cotton blend is an excellent middle ground.

Super King 204 × 204 cm 305 × 275 cm 2 pillowcases

Bambi Tencel sheets are also available in Long Single - a key size for split king adjustable beds.

Measure mattress depth before ordering fitted sheets

Tencel fitted sheets come in different drop lengths. Bambi recommends: measure mattress height and add 10 cm to allow the sheet to wrap under the mattress. For example, a 30 cm mattress needs a 40 cm drop sheet. If using a mattress topper, add its height to the measurement.

Care Tips for Tencel Sheets

Always follow the manufacturer’s specific care label. General guidance for Tencel sheets:

Wash Gently

Cold or warm gentle machine wash. Do not use hot water.

No Bleach or Softener

Softener coats fibres and reduces moisture-wicking. Bleach damages the fibre.

Line Dry in Shade

Or tumble dry cool. Air drying best preserves the fabric.

Warm Iron if Needed

A quick iron or 10–12 minutes in the dryer before line drying restores a smooth finish.

Pre-Wash Before First Use

Wash separately before first use to remove any residual manufacturing finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Tencel Sheets?

Tencel sheets are bedding products made from Tencel, a brand name for a type of fabric known as lyocell. This material is derived from the pulp of trees, primarily eucalyptus, which are grown on sustainably managed plantations. Here are some of the noteworthy properties of Tencel:

  • Eco-friendly: Tencel's production process is highly sustainable. It uses a closed-loop system, which recycles water and reuses the solvents that are used to transform the wood pulp into fibre. Additionally, the eucalyptus trees used for Tencel require less water and no pesticides to grow compared to other fibre-producing plants like cotton.
  • Soft and smooth: Tencel has a very soft and silky texture, providing a luxurious feel comparable to that of high-quality cotton or silk.

Furthermore, Tencel sheets have excellent breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities, meaning they can absorb and release moisture efficiently, keeping the sleeping environment comfortable and dry. These properties make Tencel sheets an excellent choice for hot sleepers or those living in warm climates. Tencel is also hypoallergenic, resistant to wrinkles, and durable, making it suitable for those with sensitive skin and for long-term use. Despite their slightly higher cost compared to regular cotton sheets, many people find that the benefits of Tencel sheets, such as their comfort, durability, and eco-friendliness, make them a worthwhile investment for quality sleep.

What is Tencel Cotton?

Tencel and cotton are both types of materials used in textiles, each with its own distinct features and benefits. Tencel is a brand name for a type of lyocell, a fabric made from the pulp of trees (mainly eucalyptus), while cotton is a natural fibre that grows in a boll around the seeds of cotton plants. When referred to as Tencel Cotton, it usually means a blend of these two fabrics. Let's look at their respective properties:

  • Tencel: Known for its smoothness, Tencel has a silky, soft feel. It's highly absorbent, breathable, and biodegradable. It's also hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for those with sensitive skin.
  • Cotton: Cotton is widely appreciated for its softness, breathability, and durability. It's also hypoallergenic and can be washed at high temperatures, making it hygienic.

When combined into a blend, Tencel and cotton offer the best of both worlds. Tencel cotton sheets or garments typically have a luxuriously soft and smooth feel, are breathable, and hold up well to washing and wear. They're also good for temperature regulation, as both cotton and Tencel can wick moisture away from the body. This blend is therefore comfortable in various climates and seasons. Additionally, the eco-friendly attributes of Tencel and the natural origins of cotton make Tencel cotton a more sustainable choice compared to many synthetic materials. However, as with any fabric, it's advisable to check for any specific care instructions to maintain its quality and lifespan.

Are Tencel Sheets heallty?

Tencel sheets are generally considered healthy and safe for use, and they offer several features that may promote a healthier sleep environment. Here's why:

  • Hypoallergenic: Tencel is naturally hypoallergenic, which means it's less likely to cause allergic reactions. This makes it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Breathable and moisture-wicking: Tencel sheets are breathable and can efficiently wick away moisture. These properties help to maintain a dry and cool sleeping surface, which is not only comfortable but can also reduce the growth of bacteria and mites, contributing to a cleaner sleeping environment.

In addition to these health benefits, Tencel is also an eco-friendly material. It is produced using a closed-loop process that recycles water and reuses solvents, minimising environmental impact. The source of Tencel, eucalyptus trees, are sustainably grown, requiring less water and no pesticides compared to other fibre-producing plants. Therefore, for those concerned about their health and the health of the planet, Tencel sheets can be a great choice. As with any product, it's advisable to choose high-quality Tencel sheets from reputable brands and follow the care instructions to maintain their quality and longevity.

Are Tencel Sheets cooling?

Tencel sheets are indeed known for their cooling properties, making them an ideal choice for those who tend to sleep hot or live in warm climates. This cooling characteristic is due to a couple of key features:

  • Breathability: Tencel fabric is highly breathable, allowing for effective air circulation. This can help to dissipate body heat, contributing to a cooler sleeping surface.
  • Moisture-wicking: Tencel is also very good at wicking away moisture. It can absorb and release moisture effectively, which not only keeps the sleeping surface dry, but can also reduce the sensation of heat.

These properties come from the unique structure of Tencel fibres, which are composed of tiny fibrils, or small hairs, that channel moisture away and regulate temperature. As a result, Tencel sheets offer a cool, dry, and comfortable sleeping environment. In addition to these cooling benefits, Tencel sheets are also soft, smooth, and durable, providing a luxurious feel and long-lasting use. So if you're someone who often finds yourself waking up feeling too hot at night, Tencel sheets could be an effective solution for a more comfortable, restful sleep.

Are Tencel Sheets hypoallergenic?

Yes, Tencel sheets are hypoallergenic, meaning they are less likely to cause allergic reactions. This quality makes them a suitable choice for people with sensitive skin or those who suffer from allergies. Let's explore why:

  • Hypoallergenic: The smooth fibre surface of Tencel can reduce the irritation often caused by rougher fabrics. This makes Tencel a good option for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Moisture-wicking: Tencel sheets are excellent at wicking away moisture. By keeping the sleeping surface dry, they help to create an environment that is less conducive to the growth of bacteria and dust mites, common triggers for allergies.

These attributes, combined with Tencel's softness and breathability, contribute to a comfortable and healthy sleep environment. Moreover, the eco-friendly production process of Tencel, which uses non-toxic solvents and recycles water, ensures that the fabric is free from harmful substances that could potentially cause reactions or irritations. However, as with all bedding products, it's advisable to wash new Tencel sheets before use to remove any residues from the manufacturing process and to refresh the fabric for use. Overall, Tencel sheets can offer a luxurious, cool, and hypoallergenic sleeping experience.

Are Tencel Sheets warm in winter?

Tencel sheets are known for their excellent temperature-regulating properties, which makes them a good choice for all seasons, including winter. Here's how they perform in colder conditions:

  • Thermal regulation: Tencel has the ability to adapt to body temperature. During winter, it can help retain body heat, providing a cosy sleeping environment.
  • Moisture-wicking: Tencel's high absorbency helps wick away moisture, keeping the sleeping surface dry and comfortable. This can be beneficial in winter, as it helps reduce dampness from perspiration or humidity.

Though Tencel sheets can provide warmth in winter, they are generally lightweight and may not be as warm as some other types of sheets, like flannel or heavy cotton. However, they can be effectively paired with suitable blankets, duvets, or comforters to achieve the desired level of warmth. Moreover, Tencel's softness and smoothness add to its comfort, making it feel luxurious and inviting during colder nights. So, if you're looking for sheets that provide a balance of warmth, breathability, and moisture management, Tencel could be an excellent choice. As with all bedding, personal comfort preferences and the specific climate should be considered when choosing your winter bed linens.
