Guide to Choosing a Quilt Cover

The removable fabric shell that protects the quilt, regulates temperature against the skin, and sets the look of the bed.

A quilt cover (also called a duvet cover or doona cover) is the removable fabric shell that goes over a quilt or doona. It serves two purposes: protecting the quilt from body oils, stains, and wear, and adding style and colour to the bedroom. A quality quilt cover extends the life of the quilt inside - wash the cover weekly instead of washing the quilt itself every few months.

Why a Performance Quilt Cover Matters

  • Protects the quilt from body oils, perspiration, and stains - extending quilt life
  • Enables weekly washing without needing to wash the quilt itself
  • Temperature regulation at the skin surface - cooling in summer, warmth retention in winter
  • Naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial in Tencel and bamboo fabrics
  • Moisture wicking up to 3x more efficient than cotton-polyester covers
  • Maintains the full performance chain when matched to the quilt fill material

The range here focuses on performance fabrics - Tencel, bamboo, and bamboo-cotton blends - that actively contribute to temperature regulation and allergy management rather than just sitting as a decorative layer. The quilt cover fabric directly contacts the sleeper's skin, making the material choice just as important as the quilt fill itself.

Why the Cover Material Matters

A quilt cover made from cotton-polyester sits between the sleeper and the quilt fill, creating a barrier that can reduce the breathability and moisture-wicking benefits of high-performance fills like Tencel, bamboo, wool, and alpaca. Matching the cover material to the quilt fill ensures the entire bedding layer works together rather than against itself.

Optimal Match

Tencel or Bamboo Fill + Tencel or Bamboo Cover

Consistent temperature regulation and moisture management from quilt to skin. The natural fibre chain remains unbroken.

Reduced Performance

Tencel or Bamboo Fill + Cotton-Polyester Cover

The cover traps heat and moisture at the surface, partially negating the quilt fill's cooling and wicking properties.

The Cover Is the Layer Closest to the Skin

Above the flat sheet or directly in contact if no flat sheet is used. If temperature regulation, cooling, or allergy protection is a priority, the cover fabric matters as much as the fill inside it.

Materials Available

100% Tencel - Bambi EcoTouch

Feel: Smooth, cool to touch with a subtle lustre. Manages moisture 50% better than cotton. Naturally antibacterial - no chemical treatments needed.

Best for: Hot sleepers, sensitive skin, eczema, and allergy sufferers. The ideal match for Tencel quilts.

100% Organic Bamboo - Eastwind Sateen

Feel: Silky sateen feel with natural sheen. Up to 3x cotton moisture-wicking. Antibacterial and hypoallergenic. Oeko-Tex certified.

Best for: Hot sleepers wanting a silky texture, eco-conscious buyers. The ideal match for bamboo quilts.

Bamboo-Cotton Blend - Balmain 1000 TC

Feel: 50% bamboo, 50% cotton. 1000 TC sateen. Smooth-glide feel with a subtle sheen. Combines bamboo's cooling with cotton's structure.

Best for: Those wanting bamboo's benefits with a slightly more structured, less slippery feel than 100% bamboo.

100% European Flax Linen - Natural Home

Feel: Relaxed, textured look. Breathable and durable. Gets softer with every wash. Naturally temperature-regulating.

Best for: Those who prefer a casual, lived-in aesthetic with natural fibre performance. Warm climates.

What's Included in a Quilt Cover Set

A quilt cover set typically comes with two components designed to work together for a coordinated look and consistent fabric performance.

Quilt Cover

Quilt Cover

The fabric envelope that the quilt inserts into. Closes with buttons, press studs, or a zipper at the bottom end. Some covers use press studs inside to secure the quilt and prevent bunching.

Pillowcases

Pillowcases

Standard size (48 x 73 cm). Most sets include 2 pillowcases; single sets include 1. Matching material for consistent fabric performance against the face.

Quilt Cover Sizing

Quilt Size Cover Dimensions (approx) Notes
Single 140 x 210 cm 1 pillowcase in sets
Double 180 x 210 cm 2 pillowcases
Queen 210 x 210 cm Most common size
King 245 x 210 cm 2 pillowcases
Super King 270 x 240 cm Check availability per brand
Baby / Cot 100 x 130 cm Bambi Tencel baby cover available

Always Size the Cover to Match the Quilt, Not the Bed

A queen cover on a king quilt will bunch and wrinkle. A king cover on a queen quilt will leave excess fabric that sags. If using an oversized quilt for extra drape (e.g., a king quilt on a queen bed), the cover must also be the oversized dimension.

Care & Cleaning

Washing the quilt cover weekly is the most practical way to keep the quilt fresh and reduce allergen build-up without frequently washing the quilt itself.

Wash Weekly

Protects the quilt from body oils and allergen build-up without needing to wash the quilt itself.

Cold or Warm Cycle

Both Tencel and bamboo should be washed in cold or warm water. Hot water damages natural fibres and causes shrinkage.

No Bleach or Softener

Softener coats fibres and reduces moisture-wicking. Bleach damages both Tencel and bamboo.

Line Dry or Low Tumble

Air drying best preserves fabric. Bamboo in particular should be line dried where possible.

Turn Inside Out

Protects the outer surface and reduces friction during the wash cycle.

Wash Before First Use

Removes any residual manufacturing finish for a clean, fresh feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a quilt cover, or can I use the quilt without one?

A quilt cover is strongly recommended. It protects the quilt casing from body oils, perspiration, and stains - extending the quilt's life significantly. It also allows weekly washing without the need to wash the quilt itself (which may require a commercial machine for larger sizes). Some sleepers do use Tencel quilts uncovered for the direct-to-skin feel, but a matching Tencel cover provides the same fabric sensation with the added protection.

Should I match my quilt cover material to my quilt fill?

For the best performance, yes. A Tencel cover on a Tencel quilt maintains the full moisture-wicking and cooling chain. A cotton-polyester cover on a Tencel quilt creates a barrier that can trap heat at the surface, reducing the cooling benefit of the fill. If budget limits the choice, any natural fibre cover (cotton, bamboo, Tencel, linen) is preferable to a synthetic blend.

What's the difference between a quilt cover and a coverlet?

A quilt cover is an envelope that a quilt inserts into - it wraps around and encloses the quilt. A coverlet is a standalone lightweight bedspread that sits on top of the bed as a decorative layer or light cover, without enclosing a quilt. Coverlets are typically used for styling or as a warm-weather alternative to a full quilt. Browse coverlets and comforters.

How do I stop the quilt from bunching inside the cover?

Several approaches help: choose a cover with internal ties or press studs (like the Bambi Tencel Long Single cover) that attach to the quilt corners. Alternatively, turn the cover inside out, reach in to grab the far corners of the quilt, then roll/flip the cover right-side-out over the quilt. Ensure the cover size matches the quilt exactly - an oversized cover will allow the quilt to shift.

Are bamboo quilt covers good for hot sleepers?

Yes - bamboo is one of the best quilt cover materials for hot sleepers. Bamboo sateen wicks moisture up to 3x more effectively than cotton and provides natural thermal regulation. Paired with a bamboo quilt or Tencel quilt, a bamboo cover creates a fully temperature-regulated sleep surface. Tencel covers offer similar cooling performance with a slightly smoother, less silky feel.
