Honeysuckle and Tulip gathers four of the flowers Morris returned to most often — crown imperial, tulip, honeysuckle and fritillary — and sets them against a dense backdrop of yew. The palette here runs through soft sage greens and warm plaster pink, which keeps a densely packed design feeling gentle rather than heavy.
Morris at his most recognisable
The design dates to 1876, and his daughter May later described it as the most characteristically Morris of everything he drew in his later years. That balance between wild growth and careful structure is exactly what people mean when they call a pattern Morrisian.
