The Australian Guide to Bamboo Sheets

Why bamboo is Australia's fastest-growing sheet fabric, how the cooling works, what to look for in thread count and sizing - and which brands we stock.

Bamboo sheets are the fastest-growing segment in Australian bedding - and the main reason is temperature. Bamboo lyocell fabric wicks moisture up to three times more efficiently than cotton, feels cool to the touch, and is naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial. For hot sleepers, humid climates, and sensitive skin, bamboo sheets offer a measurable improvement over standard cotton.

Why Australians Are Switching to Bamboo

  • Moisture wicking up to 3x more efficient than cotton
  • Cool to the touch - ideal for hot sleepers
  • Naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial
  • Temperature regulating - cooler in summer, warmer in winter
  • Silky-smooth feel that softens with every wash
  • Sustainable and eco-friendly fibre source

Why Bamboo Sheets Feel Cooler

The difference comes down to fibre structure. Bamboo fibres contain micro-gaps and micro-holes that create natural ventilation and moisture channels.

Rapid Moisture Wicking Sweat is transported away from the skin 3x faster than cotton and evaporated - rather than absorbed and held in the fabric.
Cool to Initial Touch The smooth fibre surface conducts heat away from the skin on contact, creating an instant cooling sensation when you get into bed.
Two-Way Regulation Cooler in summer through ventilation, warmer in winter by trapping a thin insulating layer of air when the room temperature drops.

Sheet Types - What's Included

Bamboo sheets are sold in several configurations. Select a type below to see exactly what's included and when to choose it.

Sheet Set

Includes: 1 x fitted sheet + 1 x flat sheet + pillowcase(s)

The complete bed setup and best-value option. Buying a complete set ensures all layers match in colour, fabric weight, and shrinkage behaviour - mixing bamboo pieces from different brands can result in slight colour and texture mismatches after washing.

Shop Bamboo Sheet Sets

Fitted Sheet Set

Includes: 1 x fitted sheet + pillowcase(s) - no flat sheet

For sleepers who use a quilt directly over the fitted sheet without a flat sheet. This is increasingly common in Australia and avoids paying for a flat sheet you won't use.

Shop Bamboo Fitted Sets

Fitted Sheet (Individual)

Includes: 1 x fitted sheet only - elasticated edges, wraps around mattress

For replacing a worn fitted sheet, or adding bamboo to an existing cotton set. Bamboo fitted sheets typically have a 40-50 cm wall depth to accommodate mattresses with toppers.

Flat Sheet (Individual)

Includes: 1 x flat sheet only - the loose top sheet between sleeper and quilt

For replacing a worn flat sheet, or using as a lightweight summer cover on its own. A bamboo flat sheet can replace a light blanket during warm months.

Pillowcases (Pair)

Includes: 2 x pillowcases - standard size unless specified

Upgrading pillowcases to bamboo for facial skin benefits and cooling, or replacing worn cases. Bamboo pillowcases are popular for reducing friction on skin and hair overnight.

Best Starting Point

A full sheet set is the best starting point. Buying a complete set ensures all layers match in colour, fabric weight, and shrinkage behaviour - mixing bamboo pieces from different brands can result in slight colour and texture mismatches after washing.

Bamboo vs Cotton vs Tencel

How does bamboo compare to the other popular sheet fabrics? Here's a side-by-side breakdown of the key differences.

Property Bamboo (Lyocell/Viscose) Cotton (Percale/Sateen) Tencel (Lyocell)
Cooling Excellent - cool to touch, highly breathable Good - (percale) to moderate (sateen) Excellent - very similar to bamboo
Moisture Wicking ~3x cotton Absorbs moisture but releases slowly ~2-3x cotton
Feel / Texture Silky, smooth - similar to cashmere Crisp (percale) or smooth (sateen) Silky smooth - very close to bamboo
Hypoallergenic Yes - naturally antibacterial Varies - untreated cotton is mild Yes - naturally antibacterial
Durability Good - gets softer with washing Very good - most durable option Good - comparable to bamboo
Sustainability High - fast-growing, low water use Moderate - high water crop High - eucalyptus, closed-loop process
Care Cold wash, line dry recommended Machine wash warm, tumble dry Cold wash, low-heat tumble or line dry
Price Range Mid to premium Budget to premium Mid to premium

Bamboo vs cotton: bamboo is the clear winner for hot sleepers, sensitive skin, and moisture management. Cotton wins on durability, ease of care, and breadth of price range.

Bamboo vs Tencel: the two are very similar in cooling performance and feel. Both are sustainable lyocell-based fabrics. Bamboo tends to have a slightly more silky drape; Tencel tends to have a slightly smoother, more structured feel. Choice between them is largely personal preference. Browse Tencel sheets for comparison.

Thread Count - What It Means for Bamboo

Thread count (TC) works differently for bamboo than for cotton. Because bamboo fibres are finer and smoother, requiring fewer threads per inch to achieve the same softness and density, a lower bamboo TC achieves the same feel as a much higher cotton TC.

The Bamboo Thread Count Sweet Spot

Don't be misled by thread count alone - with bamboo, 300-400 TC is the optimal range. Higher isn't necessarily better; it can make the fabric denser and less breathable, which defeats the cooling purpose.

Bamboo
300-400 TC

Feels equivalent to 800-1000 TC cotton

Finer fibres = fewer threads needed

400 TC sateen = smoothest, most luxurious feel

Cotton
800-1000 TC

Required to match bamboo's smoothness

Higher TC can feel heavy and stiff

Significantly higher price at equivalent feel

About the Eastwind Range

The Eastwind 400 TC bamboo sateen is Oeko-Tex certified (free from harmful chemicals) and represents the premium end of the bamboo thread count range. It produces an exceptionally smooth, silky surface without the heavy, stiff feel of very high TC cotton sheets.

Sizing - Why Bamboo Sheets Arrive Oversized

Not a Sizing Error - Bamboo sheets are intentionally cut larger than the stated bed size. Bamboo fabric naturally shrinks during the first 2-3 washes - typically 3-5% in length and width. Manufacturers account for this by cutting sheets with generous oversizing. A fitted sheet that feels slightly loose when first used will shrink to a snug fit after a few cold washes.

Standard Australian Sheet Sizes

Actual dimensions will vary by brand - always check the product listing for specific measurements.

Bed Size Fitted Sheet (approx) Flat Sheet (approx) Pillowcases
Single 92 x 188 cm 160 x 260 cm 1 pillowcase
King Single 107 x 203 cm 180 x 260 cm 1 pillowcase
Double 138 x 188 cm 230 x 260 cm 2 pillowcases
Queen 153 x 203 cm 250 x 275 cm 2 pillowcases
King 183 x 203 cm 275 x 275 cm 2 pillowcases
Super King 204 x 204 cm 305 x 275 cm 2 pillowcases

Bamboo fitted sheets typically have a 40-50 cm wall depth to accommodate mattresses with toppers. For long single and split king sizes, check availability on individual product pages.

How to Care for Bamboo Sheets

Bamboo sheets are easy to care for - just follow these four steps to keep them silky-smooth wash after wash.

Cold Wash

Always wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild liquid detergent. Hot water accelerates shrinkage beyond what the oversizing allows for.

Line Dry

Line dry in shade when possible - preserves fibres, colour, and minimises excess shrinkage. Bamboo sheets may feel stiff when wet but return to silky feel once dry.

Low Heat Only

If tumble drying, use the lowest heat setting. Avoid high heat which damages fibres and causes excess shrinkage.

No Softener

No fabric softener or bleach. Softener coats fibres and reduces moisture-wicking; bleach damages bamboo. The fabric gets softer naturally with each wash.

Managing Shrinkage

Bamboo sheets will shrink 3-5% in the first 2-3 washes. This is why they arrive oversized. Stick to cold water and you'll get a perfect snug fit after a few washes - no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of Bamboo Sheets?

Bamboo sheets have numerous advantages which makes them a great choice for your bedding needs. Here are some of the most significant benefits:

  • Eco-friendly: Bamboo is a sustainable resource that grows rapidly, needing less water and no harmful pesticides for cultivation. This makes bamboo sheets an eco-friendly choice.
  • Thermal regulating: These sheets can adjust to your body temperature, helping keep you cool in summer and warm in winter, thus enhancing your sleeping experience.
  • Hypoallergenic: Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial. It's perfect for people with allergies or sensitive skin.

In addition to the above, bamboo sheets are known for their softness and durability. They're often compared to the smoothness of cashmere or silk, providing a luxury feel. Their fibre strength is higher than many other sheet materials, ensuring they last a long time without losing their quality. They also have good moisture-wicking properties, meaning they can absorb and evaporate sweat quickly, making them a great option for hot sleepers. And lastly, bamboo sheets are easy to care for, typically machine washable, and retain their softness even after multiple washes.

Are Bamboo Sheets cooling?

Bamboo sheets are indeed recognised for their superior cooling properties, which make them an excellent choice for hot sleepers and warmer climates. The cooling characteristic is primarily due to two factors:

  • Thermal regulation: Bamboo sheets are known for their thermal regulating properties. They adjust to your body temperature, providing a cooling effect in warmer conditions and retaining heat when it's colder.
  • Moisture-wicking: These sheets can effectively absorb and evaporate perspiration. This moisture-wicking ability keeps the sleeping surface dry and comfortable, reducing the feeling of heat.

These properties result from the unique structure of bamboo fibres. They contain micro-gaps and micro-holes, enabling excellent ventilation and moisture absorption. As a result, bamboo sheets feel breathable and maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature. Additionally, bamboo fabric is lightweight and drapes nicely over your body, further enhancing its cooling effect. Thus, if you often find yourself feeling too hot during sleep, switching to bamboo sheets might be a good solution for a cooler, more restful night's sleep.

Are Bamboo Sheets good for winter?

Bamboo sheets are not only suitable for summer but also excellent for winter use. This versatility is primarily due to their remarkable thermal-regulating properties. Let's delve into these attributes a bit more:

  • Thermal regulation: Bamboo sheets have the ability to adapt to body temperature. They can help retain body heat in cold weather, making them a comfortable choice for winter.
  • Moisture-wicking: While this attribute is often highlighted for its cooling benefits, it's also useful in winter. By effectively wicking away perspiration, bamboo sheets can keep you dry and warm, avoiding the discomfort of dampness from night sweats or humidity.

Moreover, the inherent softness and breathability of bamboo fabric also contribute to its comfort during winter. The material is gentle and plush against the skin, providing a cosy and inviting sleep environment. Despite its lightweight nature, bamboo fabric is quite durable and can withstand the rigours of frequent use and washing, important for bedding used throughout the year. Therefore, if you're looking for sheets that can provide comfort and optimal sleep conditions year-round, bamboo sheets could be an excellent choice. However, it's always advisable to complement your bedding with suitable duvets, blankets, or comforters depending on your climate and personal warmth preferences.

Are bamboo sheets cooler than cotton?

Yes. Bamboo fibres wick moisture approximately 3× faster than cotton and feel cool to initial touch. The difference is most noticeable on humid summer nights when cotton can feel clammy. For the best cooling performance, choose bamboo lyocell over bamboo viscose - the lyocell process produces a higher-quality fibre with better moisture management.

Why do my new bamboo sheets feel too big?

Bamboo sheets are intentionally cut oversized to allow for natural shrinkage during the first 2–3 cold washes (typically 3-5%). After a few washes, the fitted sheet will settle to a snug fit. Always wash in cold water to manage shrinkage - hot water causes excess shrinkage beyond what the manufacturer has allowed for.

Bamboo or Tencel - which is better?

Both are excellent cooling fabrics with very similar performance. Bamboo tends to feel slightly more silky with a softer drape. Tencel tends to feel slightly smoother and more structured. Both are sustainable, hypoallergenic, and antibacterial. The choice is largely personal preference - if possible, try both.

How do I care for bamboo sheets?

Always follow the manufacturer's specific care label. General guidance: cold wash on a gentle cycle with mild liquid detergent. No fabric softener (coats the fibres and reduces cooling). No bleach. Line dry in shade for best results, or tumble dry on the lowest heat setting. Bamboo sheets may feel stiff when wet - this is normal; they return to their silky feel once dry.
