Guide to Choosing an Allergy Sensitive Pillow

Fill types, endorsed brands, sizing, and the complete allergy bedding stack - everything you need to find the right hypoallergenic pillow for healthier sleep.

For the one in five Australians who live with allergies or asthma, the pillow is one of the most important bedding choices. It sits directly against the face and airways for 7-9 hours every night - making it the single closest point of contact between the sleeper and potential allergens like dust mites, mould, and bacteria. An allergy sensitive pillow - also described as a hypoallergenic pillow or anti allergy pillow - is designed to either resist these allergens naturally or be treated to inhibit their growth.

At a Glance

  • Available in standard, king, European, and contoured shapes
  • Pair with a zippered pillow protector for maximum allergen protection

Hypoallergenic vs Allergy Sensitive - What's the Difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a meaningful distinction.

General Descriptor
Hypoallergenic

Means the pillow is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. This is a general descriptor and is not independently verified. Most natural latex, Tencel, and Ingeo pillows are inherently hypoallergenic due to the properties of the material itself.

Tested & Approved
Allergy Sensitive / Anti Allergy

Typically indicates the pillow has been treated with an antimicrobial agent (such as Bioguard™, Healthguard®, or Ultra-Fresh) or has been independently tested and approved by a body like the National Asthma Council Australia.

Sensitive Choice Blue Butterfly sealLook for the Sensitive Choice Blue Butterfly seal

This is the independent benchmark. The National Asthma Council Australia's Sensitive Choice program tests and approves products as suitable for people with asthma and allergies. It is not a marketing claim - products must meet specific criteria to carry the seal. Several pillows in this range hold Sensitive Choice approval.

Fill Types for Allergy Sufferers

Six distinct fill types offer allergy protection in different ways - from natural materials that inherently resist allergens to treated fibres with antimicrobial agents. Tap a fill type below to jump to its details, or scroll through all six.

Tencel

Derived from eucalyptus wood pulp. Naturally antibacterial - moisture management prevents the damp environment dust mites need to thrive. Absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton. Soft, lightweight, and static-free.

Best for: Sleepers wanting a natural, breathable fill with inherent antibacterial properties and outstanding moisture management.

Who Needs an Allergy Sensitive Pillow?

Allergy sensitive pillows are not only for people with a formal diagnosis. A range of common situations and conditions benefit from bedding that actively resists allergens.

Dust Mite Allergy

The most common bedroom allergen trigger in Australia. Dust mites feed on dead skin cells and thrive in warm, moist pillow environments. Symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes.

Asthma

Airborne allergens from bedding are a known trigger for nocturnal asthma symptoms. An allergy-rated pillow reduces the allergen load directly beside the airways during sleep.

Eczema & Sensitive Skin

Irritants in bedding can worsen skin conditions. Smooth, naturally antibacterial fills like Tencel are gentle against the skin and manage moisture to reduce irritation.

Hay Fever (Allergic Rhinitis)

Seasonal allergy sufferers often find symptoms worsen at night due to accumulated allergens in bedding. Switching to a hypoallergenic pillow can reduce overnight congestion.

Children & Babies

Young immune systems are more sensitive to allergens. Allergy-friendly pillows are a practical choice for children's bedrooms. Browse kids pillows for age-appropriate options.

Available Sizes & Shapes

Allergy sensitive pillows are not limited to one size or shape. The range includes options across all major pillow formats, so allergy sufferers don't need to compromise on fit or sleeping position.

Size / Shape Dimensions Available Fills Best For
Standard 48 × 73 cm Tencel, Ingeo, latex, microfibre, memory foam, wool + latex Most sleepers. Fits single, double, and queen beds
King 50 × 90 cm Ingeo, microfibre Sleepers who move around at night or want a wider surface. See king pillows
European 65 × 65 cm Microfibre Decorative backdrop and seated back support. See European pillows
Contoured Contoured shape Talalay latex, memory foam Ergonomic neck support with dual-contour design. See contoured pillows

Complete the Allergy Bedding Range

A hypoallergenic pillow is most effective when it is part of a complete allergy-managed bedding setup. Each layer adds another barrier between the sleeper and common allergens.

Wash frequency matters

Even hypoallergenic pillows accumulate dead skin cells and moisture over time - the two things dust mites feed on. Wash microfibre and Ingeo pillows every 3-4 months. For latex and memory foam (which cannot be machine washed), use a zippered allergy pillow protector and wash the protector monthly. Air the pillow itself in sunlight regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are feather and down pillows suitable for allergy sufferers?

Generally not recommended. While modern down processing (such as Downia's Puresan™) removes most allergens, feather and down fills can still harbour dust mites more readily than latex, Tencel, or Ingeo. If allergies are a primary concern, plant-based fibres, treated microfibre, or latex are safer choices. If down is preferred, always use a zippered allergy pillow protector as a barrier.

What is the Sensitive Choice Blue Butterfly seal?

The Sensitive Choice program is run by the National Asthma Council Australia. Products carrying the Blue Butterfly seal have been independently assessed as suitable for people with asthma and allergies. It is not a marketing claim - manufacturers must demonstrate their product inhibits dust mite growth and meets specific criteria. In this range, Bambi Tencel, Bambi Ingeo, Tontine anti-allergy, and Herington ExcelFibre® pillows carry the seal.

Can I use a latex pillow if I have a latex allergy?

No. People with a diagnosed latex allergy should avoid latex pillows entirely. Talalay latex is derived from natural rubber, and while it is processed extensively, it can still trigger a reaction in latex-sensitive individuals. Tencel, Ingeo, or treated microfibre pillows are the best alternatives - all are completely latex-free.

How often should I replace an allergy sensitive pillow?

As a guide: microfibre pillows every 2–3 years, Tencel and Ingeo every 3–4 years, and latex pillows can last up to 10 years (Dunlopillo provides a 10-year warranty). Signs it's time to replace: the pillow no longer springs back when folded, visible staining that washing cannot remove, or waking with increased allergy symptoms despite clean bedding.

Is a pillow protector necessary if the pillow is already hypoallergenic?

Strongly recommended. A hypoallergenic pillow resists allergens but doesn't make them disappear entirely. A zippered pillow protector creates a physical barrier that prevents dust mites, dead skin cells, and moisture from reaching the fill. It also extends the pillow's life significantly by keeping the fill clean. For allergy management, the combination of a hypoallergenic pillow inside a protector is far more effective than either alone.
