Guide to Coverlets & Comforters

Standalone bed coverings that look finished without a quilt cover - simpler to style, easier to make, and a practical alternative to the quilt-plus-cover combination.

Coverlets and comforters are standalone bed coverings that sit on top of the bed as a finished piece - they don't need a quilt cover. Unlike a quilt (which is a plain fill inserted into a decorative cover), a coverlet or comforter is designed to be used as-is, with its own outer fabric providing both the look and the function. This makes them simpler to use, easier to style, and a practical alternative to the traditional quilt-plus-cover combination.

Coverlet vs Comforter vs Quilt - What's the Difference

Tap a type below to jump to its detail, or browse the comparison table to see how they differ in warmth, coverage, and whether a quilt cover is required.

Coverlet

A lightweight, decorative bedspread. Usually covers the mattress top and sides but doesn't reach the floor. Often quilted or woven with a pattern or texture built into the fabric itself.

Warmth: Light - heavier than a flat sheet but lighter than a comforter. Ideal for summer or as a decorative top layer over a quilt in cooler months.

Quilt cover needed? No - used as-is. The outer fabric is the finished surface.

Comforter

A thicker, warmer bed covering with fill (typically microfibre or bamboo blend) stitched between two outer fabric layers. Larger than a coverlet - drapes further over the sides.

Warmth: Moderate - warmer than a coverlet, but generally not as warm as a dedicated winter quilt. Good for cooler months and mild winters.

Quilt cover needed? No - used as-is. Often reversible with a different colour or pattern on each side.

Quilt (Doona/Duvet)

A plain fabric shell filled with wool, down, Tencel, bamboo, or synthetic fibre. Designed to be inserted into a quilt cover for protection and style.

Warmth: Light to heavy - available in every warmth level from 150 GSM summer to 730 GSM winter.

Quilt cover needed? Yes - requires a quilt cover for protection and to provide the visual finish.

Type What It Is Warmth Quilt Cover?
Coverlet Lightweight decorative bedspread - covers mattress and sides but not the floor. Quilted or woven pattern built into the fabric Light No
Comforter Thicker bed covering with fill stitched between two outer layers. Larger drape than a coverlet. Often reversible Moderate No
Quilt (Doona) Plain fabric shell with fill - designed to go inside a quilt cover for protection and style Light to heavy Yes

No Quilt Cover = Simpler Bed Making

Because coverlets and comforters are used without a cover, there's no inserting a quilt into an envelope, no struggling with corners, and no bunching. Place it on the bed and it's done. This makes them particularly popular for guest bedrooms, styling, and anyone who values a quick, fuss-free bed setup.

When to Choose a Coverlet or Comforter

Coverlets and comforters suit a range of bedding situations - from summer-only use to year-round styling.

Summer Bedding

Summer Bedding

A coverlet provides just enough weight and warmth for hot nights without overheating. Used alone over a sheet, it replaces a lightweight summer quilt.

Bedroom Styling

Bedroom Styling

Designed to look finished on the bed. Coordinated sets with matching pillowcases and cushions create a polished, hotel-style look without a separate quilt cover.

Winter Layering

Winter Layering

A coverlet on top of a quilt adds both extra warmth and a decorative finish. A common styling technique that also hides the quilt underneath.

Guest Bedrooms

Guest Bedrooms

The simplicity of a comforter (no separate cover to wash and match) makes guest room setup and changeover easy.

Warm Climates

Warm Climates

In tropical and subtropical areas, a comforter may provide enough warmth year-round without needing a heavy quilt.

How to Use a Coverlet

The most common ways to style a coverlet on the bed - from standalone summer use to layered hotel-style finishing.

Summer - Alone Place the coverlet directly over a flat sheet or fitted sheet. No quilt underneath. The coverlet provides light warmth and a finished look.
Winter - Layered Place a quilt on the bed first, then fold the coverlet across the foot or drape it over the top as a decorative finish and extra warmth layer.
All-Season - Bed Runner Fold the coverlet at the foot of the bed for a hotel-style touch. It's there if extra warmth is needed during the night, without adding bulk.

Quilt Coverlet & Comforters Sizing

Bed Size Quilt Dimensions (Reference) Notes for Coverlets
Single 140 x 210 cm Coverlet may be slightly smaller.
Double 180 x 210 cm Less common - check availability
Queen 210 x 210 cm The most common size
King 245 x 210 cm Available in most ranges
Super King 270 x 240 cm Check availability per product

Coverlets Are Typically Smaller Than Quilts

A coverlet is designed to cover the mattress top and drape over the sides, but not reach the floor. A comforter is usually closer to quilt dimensions with a fuller drape. Always check the specific product dimensions - coverlet sizing varies more between brands than quilt sizing does.

Care & Cleaning

Because coverlets and comforters don't have a removable cover, the outer fabric needs to be maintained directly. Follow these steps to keep yours looking its best.

Gentle Cycle

Machine wash on gentle cycle with cold or warm water and mild detergent.

No Bleach

No bleach or fabric softener - both can damage natural fibres and degrade fabric texture.

Line Dry

Line dry or tumble dry on low. Eastwind bamboo coverlets should be line dried for best results.

Inside Out

Wash inside out to protect the decorative surface from friction during washing.

Use a Sheet

Place a flat sheet between sleeper and coverlet - the sheet catches body oils and reduces wash frequency.

Coverlets and Comforters are bedspreads which can really enhance the look of your bedroom.

Coverlets are lightweight bedspread, generally lighter than Comforters, and are a great alternative to a lightweight quilt in summer. People generally use them alone with a sheet layered underneath.

Comforters are generally thicker, warmer and cosier than a Coverlet, and are great in cooler months but don't have the same warmth as a quilt. Again people use them alone without an additional cover, typically with a flat sheet layered underneath.
