The Australian Guide to Latex Pillows

What makes latex different, Talalay vs standard latex, ventilated pincore designs - and how to choose the right profile and firmness.

Latex Pillow

What Is a Latex Pillow?

Latex pillows are made from the sap of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis), whipped into foam and baked into shape. The result is a naturally springy, supportive material that bounces back instantly when you move - very different from the slow, “sinking” feel of memory foam. You rest on a latex pillow rather than in it.

At a Glance

  • Instantly bouncy - adjusts the moment you change position
  • Naturally hypoallergenic - resists dust mites, mould & bacteria
  • Breathable pincore ventilation - sleeps cooler than memory foam
  • Long-lasting - 5 to 8 year lifespan; Dunlopillo offers 10-year warranty
  • Available in classic, contoured & gel-infused shapes

Latex is naturally resistant to dust mites, mould, and bacteria - making it one of the best pillow choices for allergy and asthma sufferers. It also breathes far better than synthetic foams, staying cooler through the night. A quality latex pillow lasts 5 to 8 years (roughly twice the lifespan of memory foam), which makes it one of the best long-term investments in bedding. For a broader overview of all pillow materials, see the Australian Pillow Buying Guide.

Talalay vs Standard (Dunlop) Latex

There are two manufacturing processes used to make latex foam, and they produce noticeably different results. Both start with natural rubber tree sap, but the way the foam is set determines its feel and performance.

Talalay Process

Softer, More Consistent, More Breathable

The premium option for a plush, airy feel

The Talalay process adds an extra vacuum-sealing and flash-freezing step before the foam is baked. This creates a more uniform, open-cell structure throughout the pillow - meaning more consistent support from edge to edge, better airflow, and a softer, more “plush” feel at any given firmness level.

Talalay latex is also less dense than Dunlop latex, so pillows feel lighter in the hand. The downside: it’s more expensive to manufacture.

Used in: Dunlopillo Luxurious Latex range (all profiles and firmness levels), Dreamaker Gel-Infused Talalay Latex.

Standard (Dunlop) Process

Denser, Firmer, More Affordable

Excellent value with a solid, supportive feel

The original method - liquid latex is poured into a mould and baked. Natural sediment settles slightly during curing, creating a denser bottom and slightly softer top. The result is a firmer, heavier pillow with excellent durability.

Standard Dunlop latex is still a premium material - it just has a denser, more “solid” feel compared to Talalay. It’s also typically more affordable.

Used in: Contoured Ventilated Natural Latex, Flexi Pillow Natural Contoured Latex.

Which should you choose?

If you want the softest, most breathable latex experience and don't mind paying more, go Talalay (the Dunlopillo Luxurious Latex range). If you prefer firmer support or are budget-conscious, standard Dunlop-process latex is excellent value.

What Is Ventilated (Pincore) Latex?

Most latex pillows - including the entire Dunlopillo Luxurious Latex range and all Dreamaker latex pillows - feature a “pincore” design: hundreds of small cylindrical holes moulded into the foam during manufacturing. These aren’t defects - they’re deliberately engineered for two reasons.

The Pincore Design Explained

First, the holes create channels for air to flow through the pillow, dramatically improving ventilation compared to solid foam. This is a big part of why latex sleeps so much cooler than memory foam.

Second, the holes allow different zones of the pillow to compress more easily, making the surface feel softer and more responsive without reducing overall support. Some manufacturers vary the size and density of the pinholes across the pillow to create firmer support in the neck zone and softer cushioning under the head.

Latex Pillow Shapes

Latex pillows come in three main shapes. Each suits different sleeping styles and support needs.

Classic (Standard)

Most versatile shape

Contoured

Targeted neck support

Gel-Infused Latex

Extra cooling

Classic (Standard Shape)

A traditional rectangular pillow made from a single block of latex. The most popular and versatile shape - works for side, back, and (with a low profile) stomach sleeping. Dunlopillo’s Luxurious Latex Classic is available in three profile heights (low, medium, high) and three firmness levels (soft, medium, firm), giving you nine possible combinations to match your body.

Best for: All sleeping positions. The broadest range of height and firmness options.

Available from: Dunlopillo Luxurious Latex Classic, Dreamaker Latex Dual Profile.

Contoured Latex

A wave-shaped pillow with raised lobes and a recessed centre. The lobe supports the neck curve while the dip cradles the head, keeping the spine aligned. Dunlopillo’s Contour Dual Profile has two different lobe heights - flip it for a higher or lower profile. Flexi Pillow’s Natural Contoured Latex is adjustable to four heights by removing a base insert.

Best for: Side and back sleepers, neck pain, targeted cervical support. See the Contoured Pillow Buying Guide for more.

Available from: Dunlopillo Luxurious Latex Contour Dual Profile, Flexi Pillow Natural Contoured Latex, Dreamaker Contoured Ventilated Natural Latex.

Gel-Infused Talalay Latex

Talalay latex with cooling gel beads infused into the foam. Latex already sleeps cooler than memory foam, so adding gel takes it a step further - particularly useful in warmer Australian climates or for people who run hot. Available in both standard and contoured shapes.

Best for: Hot sleepers who want latex support with extra cooling.

Available from: Dreamaker Gel-Infused Talalay Latex Standard, Dreamaker Gel-Infused Talalay Latex Contoured.

Choosing Your Profile & Firmness

Latex pillows - particularly the Dunlopillo Luxurious Latex range - come in combinations of profile (height) and firmness (feel). These are independent choices: a high profile pillow can be soft, medium, or firm.

Find Your Ideal Profile & Firmness

Select your build and sleeping position for a personalised recommendation.

Your build
Primary sleeping position
Medium frame, Back Sleeper

A medium profile pillow with soft or medium feel is your best match. It provides enough height to support the neck’s natural curve without pushing your head forward. The Classic shape or a Contour Dual Profile both work well.

Latex vs Memory Foam: How Do They Compare?

These are the two leading support-pillow materials - and the choice comes down to what kind of sleeper you are. For a detailed guide to memory foam specifically, see the Memory Foam Pillow Buying Guide.

Latex

Bouncy, Cool, Long-Lasting

Responsive support that moves with you

  • Instant bounce - ideal for position changers
  • Naturally cooler (open-cell + pincore airflow)
  • Hypoallergenic and antimicrobial
  • Lasts 5–8 years; Dunlopillo offers 10-year warranty
  • No off-gassing or long airing period needed

Trade-offs: Less precise moulding. Firmer feel some find too “bouncy.”

Memory Foam

Cradling, Precise, Pressure-Relieving

Deep contouring for targeted pain relief

  • Moulds exactly to your head and neck shape
  • Deep pressure relief for specific sore spots
  • Very stable - doesn’t bounce or shift
  • Wider range of shapes and prices
  • 47% snoring reduction documented in studies

Trade-offs: Sleeps warmer. Slow to reposition. Shorter lifespan (3–5 years). Needs airing.

Quick rule of thumb

Choose latex if you sleep hot, change positions, want longevity, or have allergies. Choose memory foam if you want deep moulding, targeted pain relief, or a wider range of price points.

Caring for Your Latex Pillow

Latex is low-maintenance but there are a few rules to follow to get the best lifespan from your pillow.

Air Before First Use

New latex pillows can have a mild natural rubber scent. This is normal and usually fades within a few days of airing. It’s much milder than memory foam off-gassing.

Never Machine Wash

Water and agitation can break down the cell structure. If the core needs cleaning, hand wash gently in lukewarm water with mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and press (don’t wring) excess water out.

Avoid Sun & Tumble Dryer

Never tumble dry or expose to direct sunlight - UV degrades latex over time. Dry flat in the shade if hand washed.

Wash the Cover Regularly

Most latex pillows come with a removable, machine-washable cover. Clean this regularly. Air the pillow in a ventilated room once a month.

Use a Protector

A cotton protector between pillow and pillowcase keeps oils, moisture, and dust away - significantly extending pillow life. Shop Pillow Protectors.
