Wool Quilts Buying Guide

Australia's most trusted natural quilt fill — breathable, temperature-regulating, and hypoallergenic.

Wool is one of the oldest and most effective quilt fills available — and Australian merino wool is considered among the finest in the world. Wool fibres naturally breathe, absorb moisture, and loft to trap air in millions of tiny pockets, providing insulation without weight. The result is a quilt that keeps the body at a stable, comfortable temperature throughout the night — warm in winter, cool enough to avoid overheating in milder conditions.

This range covers pure Australian wool quilts from 150 GSM summer weight through to 730 GSM winter weight, plus alpaca and bamboo blends. For a broader comparison of all quilt materials, see the Australian Quilt Buying Guide.

Gold Woolmark

Gold Woolmark Certified: Bambi and Herington wool quilts carry the internationally recognised Gold Woolmark certification, guaranteeing pure Australian wool that meets the highest standards for fibre content, performance, and durability.

Why Wool

Natural Temperature Regulation
ACTIVE REGULATION

Natural Temperature Regulation

Wool fibres absorb moisture vapour from the body (up to 30% of their own weight) without feeling damp, then release it into the air. This active moisture management keeps the micro-climate between body and quilt stable and dry.

Breathable Insulation
BREATHABLE FILL

Breathable Insulation

The natural crimp in wool fibres creates millions of tiny air pockets that trap warmth. Unlike synthetic fills that can trap heat and cause overheating, wool allows excess heat to escape naturally.

Naturally Hypoallergenic
DUST MITE RESISTANT

Naturally Hypoallergenic

Wool resists dust mites, mould, and mildew. Several wool quilts in this range carry the National Asthma Council Australia's Sensitive Choice approval, endorsed for allergy and asthma sufferers.

Odour-Resistant
ODOUR-FREE

Odour-Resistant

Wool's moisture-wicking properties prevent the damp conditions where odour-causing bacteria thrive. A well-cared-for wool quilt stays fresh much longer between washes than synthetic alternatives.

Durable & Long-Lasting
FIBRE MEMORY

Durable & Long-Lasting

Quality wool fill returns to its original loft regardless of how it's slept on. With proper care, a wool quilt can last 10-15+ years — far outlasting synthetic alternatives.

Sustainable & Renewable
RENEWABLE

Sustainable & Renewable

Wool is a natural, biodegradable fibre. Australian wool is shorn annually from sheep raised in regulated farming conditions — a renewable resource with a low environmental footprint.

Machine Washable
EASY CARE

Machine Washable

Many wool quilts in this range are treated to allow gentle machine washing, making ongoing care practical. The Bambi Superior, Bambi Matilda, and Herington Washable ranges are all machine washable.

Downs Wool vs Standard Wool

The type of wool used significantly affects warmth, softness, and loft. Not all wool quilts are the same.

Downs Wool — Premium Grade

Sourced from the back and sides of the sheep — the highest-quality part of the fleece. Downs wool naturally lofts higher than standard wool, trapping more air and providing superior thermal insulation. The premium choice for maximum warmth, softness, and longevity.

Used in Bambi's premium Moodmaker and the Matilda ranges. The sateen cotton cover on the Moodmaker further elevates the feel.

Best loft performance Superior insulation Brands: Bambi Moodmaker, Bambi Matilda

ExcelWool® — Herington's Enhanced Wool

Herington's proprietary high-quality Australian wool, treated using the Kroy & Hercoset process to allow machine washing while maintaining wool's natural breathability and temperature regulation. A practical innovation that brings easy-care convenience to genuine wool performance.

Used across the Herington wool quilt range — the Cool Wool Summer, All Seasons, Washable 350 GSM, and Premium 500 GSM.

Machine washable Woolmark certified Brands: Herington range

Standard Carded Wool — Quality Mid-Range

Quality Australian wool that has been carded (combed) for even distribution. Provides excellent warmth, breathability, and temperature regulation at accessible price points. Used in Bambi's Superior range (with UltraFresh treatment for dust mite resistance) and in Crestell's affordable Heavy Weight range.

The Bambi Superior adds UltraFresh antimicrobial treatment, making it Sensitive Choice approved for allergy sufferers.

Wool

Australian merino wool comes from merino sheep known for producing some of the finest and softest wool in the world. The Woolmark certification on Bambi and Herington quilts guarantees the wool meets strict international standards for fibre content, performance, and durability.

Choosing the Right Weight (GSM)

GSM (grams per square metre) indicates fill density. Wool quilts are available across a wide range covering every season — from ultra-light 150 GSM summer quilts through to substantial 730 GSM winter quilts.

Summer 150-240 GSM
All Season 300-350 GSM
Winter 430-500 GSM
Heavy Winter 730 GSM
Sun

Summer — 150-240 GSM

Ultra-lightweight quilts designed for warm Australian summers and air-conditioned bedrooms. The Herington Cool Wool Summer Quilt at 150 GSM is the lightest option in the range — providing just enough insulation for mild nights without any risk of overheating. Ideal for warm climates such as coastal QLD and NT.

Note: The Herington 150 GSM Cool Wool is dry clean only. For a machine-washable summer-weight option, the lighter configurations of Bambi Matilda (300 GSM) offer a practical alternative for warmer months.

Best for: Warm sleepers Climate: QLD, NT, coastal WA Products: Herington Cool Wool Summer (150 GSM)
All Season

All Season — 300-350 GSM

The most popular weight range and the best starting point for most Australian homes. A 300-350 GSM wool quilt provides comfortable warmth for the majority of Australian nights, performing well from late spring through early autumn in most states.

The Bambi Superior and Moodmaker Light Loft (300 GSM), Herington All Seasons (350 GSM), Herington Washable (350 GSM), and MiniJumbuk Everyday all fall in this range. For the most versatile purchase, the All Seasons pack (300 GSM + 430 GSM combined) from Bambi covers every season with a single purchase.

Best for: Year-round use Climate: All Australian states Products: Bambi Superior, Moodmaker, Matilda (300) · Herington All Seasons, Washable (350) · MiniJumbuk Everyday
Winter

Winter — 430-500 GSM

Substantial fill for cold Australian winters. A 430-500 GSM wool quilt is equivalent to 2-5 blankets in warmth. Recommended for unheated bedrooms, colder climates such as Victoria, Tasmania, ACT, and southern inland NSW.

Options include: Bambi Superior High Loft (430 GSM), Bambi Moodmaker High Loft (430 GSM), Bambi Matilda High Loft (430 GSM) and Super Loft (500 GSM), Herington Premium (500 GSM), MiniJumbuk Warm (450 GSM with 400 TC sateen cover), and Crestell Heavy Weight (500 GSM).

Best for: Cold sleepers Climate: VIC, TAS, ACT, alpine regions Products: Bambi High Loft, Herington Premium, MiniJumbuk Warm, Crestell
Heavy Winter

Heavy Winter — 730 GSM

Maximum insulation for the coldest nights of the year. The 730 GSM All Seasons configuration from Bambi (Superior and Moodmaker ranges) combines two separate quilts — a 300 GSM and a 430 GSM — that clip together to create one substantial winter quilt. This is effectively 4+ blankets worth of warmth.

The MiniJumbuk Thermal also sits in the heavy winter category with Airlight Technology™ for enhanced breathability even at maximum fill weight. Suitable for Tasmania, alpine Victoria, and those who sleep very cold in any climate.

Best for: Cold climates and cold sleepers Climate: TAS, alpine VIC, cold inland areas Products: Bambi All Seasons (730 GSM) · MiniJumbuk Thermal

All Seasons packs are the most versatile option. Bambi's Superior and Moodmaker ranges include an All Seasons configuration — two separate quilts (300 GSM + 430 GSM) that can be used individually for summer and mid-season, then clipped together to create a 730 GSM winter quilt. One purchase covers every season.

Use a quilt cover to protect the cotton casing and reduce wash frequency. Size the cover to match the quilt dimensions, not the bed size. Herington also offers a kids wool quilt — the My First Quilt (60% cotton / 40% wool, 350 GSM, machine washable) in Single and Double sizes. For general GSM guidance across all quilt materials, see the Australian Quilt Buying Guide.

Care & Cleaning

Care requirements vary by product — always check the specific care label. General guidance:

  • Machine washable quilts (Bambi Superior, Bambi Matilda, Herington Washable ranges) — gentle wool cycle at 40°C maximum. Use a Woolmark-approved wool detergent. Normal spin. Tumble dry on low setting or line dry in shade
  • Dry clean only quilts (Herington Cool Wool Summer) — dry clean recommended to preserve the lightweight fill structure
  • Do not bleach — bleach damages wool fibres and will void any guarantee
  • Air regularly — hang outdoors on a mild, dry day. Wool responds well to fresh air and sunlight, which naturally refreshes the fill
  • Air 24 hours before first use — allows the quilt to expand and loft fully after being compressed in packaging
  • Use a quilt cover — protects the casing from body oils and stains. Wash the cover weekly; wash or clean the quilt itself every 3-6 months
  • Store in a breathable bag — never in sealed plastic. A cotton quilt storage bag maintains airflow and prevents moisture trapping

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wool quilts suitable for allergy sufferers?

Yes — with the right product. Wool naturally resists dust mites and mould due to its moisture-wicking properties. The Bambi Superior and Herington 350 GSM Washable ranges carry the National Asthma Council Australia's Sensitive Choice approval. Bambi Superior quilts are also UltraFresh treated against mould, mildew, and dust mites.

However, sheep's wool does contain lanolin, which can trigger contact reactions in some individuals. For lanolin-sensitive people, alpaca quilts (lanolin-free) or Tencel quilts are better alternatives.

Can I machine wash a wool quilt?

Most wool quilts in this range are machine washable — the Bambi Superior, Bambi Matilda, and Herington Washable ranges are all designed for gentle machine washing at 40°C with wool-specific detergent. The exception is the Herington Cool Wool Summer Quilt (150 GSM), which is dry clean only. Always check the care label on the specific product before washing.

What's the difference between the Bambi Moodmaker and Superior wool quilts?

The Moodmaker is the premium range — it uses downs wool (from the back and sides of the sheep) which lofts higher, and has a luxurious sateen cotton cover. The Superior is the mid-range — it uses standard carded wool fill with a Japara cotton cover and includes UltraFresh treatment for mould/dust mite resistance. Both are Australian-made, Gold Woolmark certified, and available in the same GSM configurations (Light Loft, High Loft, All Seasons).

Is a 300 GSM wool quilt warm enough for winter?

For mild winters or heated bedrooms, 300 GSM can be sufficient. For cold climates (Tasmania, southern highlands, inland NSW/VIC), a 430–500 GSM quilt or the 730 GSM All Seasons configuration (two quilts clipped together) will be more appropriate. Climate, bedroom heating, and personal warmth preference all affect the right choice — see the Australian Quilt Buying Guide for detailed GSM guidance.

What is the All Seasons pack and is it worth it?

The All Seasons configuration (available in Bambi Moodmaker and Superior ranges) includes two separate quilts — a 300 GSM and a 430 GSM. Use the 300 GSM alone for summer/spring, the 430 GSM for autumn/mild winter, and clip both together to create a 730 GSM quilt for the coldest winter nights.

It's the most flexible way to cover every season with one purchase and avoids the need to buy separate summer and winter quilts. For most Australian households, it represents the best long-term value in the range.

How long do wool quilts last?

A well-cared-for wool quilt can last 10–15 years or more. Wool's natural fibre memory means it returns to its original loft regardless of how it's slept on. The Bambi Moodmaker backs this up with a 10-year guarantee. Key to longevity: use a quilt cover, wash only when needed, and store in a breathable cotton bag (never sealed plastic) during summer.
